Playwork & Early Years Foundation Stage

We adhere closely to the Values & Assumptions of Playwork

‘The First Assumption is that: children’s play is freely chosen, personally directed behaviour, motivated from within; through play, the child explores the world and her or his relationship with it, elaborating all the while in a flexible range of responses to the challenge she or he encounters; by playing, the child learns and develops as an individual.’

‘The second assumption is that: whereas children may play without encouragement or help, adults can, through the provision of an appropriate human and physical environment, significantly enhance opportunities for the child to play creatively and thus develop through play. In this way, the competent Playworker aims to provide opportunities for the individual child to achieve her or his full potential while being careful not to control the child’s direction or choice.’

Early Years Foundation Stage

For those children in the Foundation / Reception Year, we continue to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

We recognise that every child is a competent learner.  We understand that children develop in individual ways and ensure that we plan experiences that are personalised to children’s individual learning styles and interests.  Practitioners promote child led learning within all age groups and provide environments that are engaging, through offering a variety of experiences that are both challenging and achievable to extend the children’s learning

Children are observed and experiences are provided to promote learning outcome based upon the following 7 areas:

Prime Areas

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Art and Design

The 5 Star Clubs were established in 2004, offering Before & After School Care and Holiday Clubs to children aged 4-11 years in the Thurmaston and Syston areas.

We aim to provide an environment where children can engage in outdoor play, physical development & Forest School Activities.
